Walnut Market Report 11.04.24
Regarding accumulated shipments, we saw a similar season to the 2022 season. Up until the past few weeks, there has been a slight decrease in shipment volume. In the 2023 season, Chile shipped 168.350 metric tons.
The primary market for Chile's inshell walnut exports has been India, with almost 49,000 tons of exports, showing an increase of nearly 87% more than the volume exported in the 2022 season. In reference to the shelled walnuts market, we have seen a decrease of 27% in shipments to Germany this season. Spain became the primary market for Chilean shelled walnuts, with an increase of 20% in comparison to 2022 shipments.
With the United States crop, the receptions until February were 727,400 inshell metric tons. The commitments until February 2024 were 88% and shipments were 59%. The main markets for the 2023-2024 season have been the domestic market (USA), Germany, Spain, Algeria, Turkey and India.
According to season 2024, Chilean walnut commitment is 21.9% of the estimated crop up to mid-March, similar to the 2023 season's year-to-date. The 2024 harvest should start during the second week of April, which is later than the usual Chilean harvest beginning. The volume seems to be lower than in previous years but the quality is currently looking good, however, it is still early to have firm information.
