Vineyard and Orchard Update 24.07.24

The Vineyards

Starting from mid-July, grapes have moved from the veraison stage to the ripening and sugar accumulation phase. The season has progressed smoothly with minimal issues related to disease and pest damage in the vineyards. If no adverse conditions arise in the coming days, high product quality is anticipated.

Hot weather has accelerated development in the vineyards, leading to expectations that the 2024 harvest will begin 1 week to 10 days earlier than usual.

Irrigation activities in the vineyards are continuing uninterrupted through July. Disease and pest control efforts are ongoing across the region, with preventative measures being applied against the Grape Berry Moth (Lobesia botrana) and Powdery Mildew (Uncinula necator).

Weather Conditions

In July, Manisa province experienced average minimum temperatures of 20°C and average maximum temperatures of 30°C. However, in the second half of the month, temperatures soared past 40°C, reaching the highest levels in recent years. Vineyard areas saw localised rainfall and temperatures slightly above seasonal averages.

For the rest of July, temperatures in Manisa province are expected to stay mostly around seasonal norms, with minimum temperatures around 25°C and maximum temperatures reaching up to 38°C.

Apricot Orchards

By the end of July, the apricot harvest in Malatya province is nearly finished, with the drying process still underway.

Overall, apricot trees in the region are in excellent condition. Both fruit set and quantity have improved compared to last year, leading to notable enhancements in the productivity and quality of apricot production.

Weather Conditions

In Malatya province, temperatures in July are expected to stay within seasonal norms, ranging from a minimum of 22°C to a maximum of 31°C by month's end.

Fig Orchards

July marks a period of accelerated fruit development in figs following caprification and fruit set. In the plains, the fruit sizes are gradually approaching maturity, while in the mountainous regions, the figs are still around the size of large walnuts and are continuing to develop. Due to elevation differences, there can be a 15-20 day difference in the ripening periods between plains and mountainous areas.

Currently, there are no adverse conditions affecting climate or development in the fig orchards of Aydın province and its districts. However, insufficient rainfall in some areas, especially in non-irrigated mountainous regions, poses a risk of drought. This drought can significantly impact fruit size and increase the risk of sunburn on the fruits.

Weather Conditions

In Aydın province, temperatures throughout July are expected to stay within seasonal norms, ranging from a low of 21°C to a high of 36°C.
