Vineyard and Orchard Observation Report 28.05.24

Vineyards

By early May, the vineyards entered the flowering stage, and berry formation occurred within approximately 10 days.

Despite May's rainfall being within seasonal norms, a hailstorm on May 4, 2024, caused mechanical damage to shoots and clusters in 2,000 hectares in Denizli province and around 1,000 hectares in Manisa province in Türkiye. Initial reports indicate losses ranging from 5% to 40% in the affected vineyards. Generally, regionally occurring hailstorms do not pose a significant problem for overall yield.

Operations Conducted

To combat diseases and pests in vineyards, spraying continues throughout the region as of May. Growers apply preventative sprays against Downy Mildew and Powdery Mildew based on temperatures and rainfall conditions.

Weather Conditions

In the province of Manisa, temperatures are expected to remain within seasonal norms, with the lowest being 11°C and the highest being 32°C, until the end of May. The weather is anticipated to be warm and mildly rainy.

Apricot Orchards

In Malatya, as of April, orchards above 1400 metres in altitude are in the flowering period, while lower-altitude orchards have entered the "Çağla" (early green apricot) period.

Climactically, the cold and frost periods have been navigated without damage. However, precautionary measures are necessary, especially in higher regions until May. Cultivation around the base of trees and fertiliser applications in orchards has been completed. Necessary steps have been taken against Monilinia and Leaf Curl diseases during bud and fruit set periods. Overall, growers are optimistic about the 2024 yield, following a couple of years of below-normal volumes that created a supply shortage in the past.

Weather Conditions

In Malatya province, temperatures are expected to remain within seasonal norms, with the lowest being 2°C and the highest being 30°C, until the end of May. The weather is anticipated to be warm.

Fig Orchards

As of May, soil cultivation activities and spacing operations following pruning have been completed in fig orchards in Aydın province and its districts where fig cultivation is carried out. The 2024 fig crop has started to appear on the shoot tips in high-altitude areas, while development is more advanced in the plains, with the formed fruits reaching the size of hazelnuts.

Currently, there are no adverse conditions regarding climatic conditions, but slow progress is observed in orchards where irrigation cannot be performed due to low rainfall. By the end of May, preparations for grafting will have begun in the plains' orchards. For the fig harvest, it is too early to estimate the yield as the conditions in the final weeks are critical.

Weather Conditions

In Aydın province, temperatures are expected to remain within seasonal norms, with the lowest being 11°C and the highest being 32°C, until the end of May. The weather is anticipated to be warm.
