Turkish Pulses Harvest Report 15.07.24
Lentils, chickpeas, and beans are generally produced in Southeastern and Eastern Anatolia. These regions are suitable for pulse production with their soil structure and climate conditions. For example, more than 90% of lentils in Türkiye are produced in the Southeastern Anatolia region. By applying rotation, the amount of organic matter and nitrogen in the soil is increased. In this way, the structure of the soil is improved. The regions where pulses are produced have hot and arid climates and pulse crops are resistant to drought. For this reason, annual rainfall is sufficient for the crops.
Chickpeas
The cultivation area in Türkiye shows a 20% increase compared to the previous year. Considering the loss of yield last year, the good climate and good yield of the product will increase the farmer's yield by 30% in comparison to last year. Pricing is dependent on customs, and last year the export of chickpeas was subject to gradual permission depending on the quota. Prices are not expected to decrease much from previous levels due to inflation affecting the country.
Red Lentils
In Türkiye, 25% of the planting area has been switched to wheat area because the farmers have not been satisfied with the Turkish Lira for the last 3 years, and the price of wheat is better than the price of lentils. If there is no yield loss like last year and the expected rainfall is realised, it is expected to get a yield at the same level as the previous year. When looking at the areas allocated for lentil cultivation in other countries, it's not thought that there will be a problem in product supply. Due to the TL - Dollar exchange rate and export restrictions in the country, the prices of domestic lentils and imported lentils in the domestic market are the same. The new piece isn't looking to be cheaper than before either, with customs policies perhaps causing an increase.
Green Lentils
The expected demand for green lentils is very high, especially from the Middle East market. Compared to other countries, the harvest of green lentils in Türkiye takes place around July, but in others, harvesting doesn't start until October. This means that Türkiye's crop can't enter the market until then and with the prediction of the export ban being lifted it's assumed that people will be clamoring for green lentils.
Beans
It is thought that as much space will be allocated for bean planting this year as in the previous year. Since the crop is new, there is no clear information but demand for beans in the world market is increasing. External effects such as the Ukraine-Russia war have increased food prices, and Türkiye is affected much more than other places due to the unavoidable rise in foreign exchange. The export ban on chickpeas and beans continues, but this can be partially opened depending on the yield in the new harvest.
