Quinoa Market Report 16.10.24
Quinoa production registered a significant increase of 87.9% in regions such as Puno, Ayacucho and Junín. This increase is due to the expansion of the harvested area and the favourable climate which allowed lands to recover. This year it is projected to record a production of 110,000 tons.
The 2024 quinoa production has had a greater volume than the previous period 2023; the continual rains during harvest times affected the quality of the previous crop along with the presence of pests. According to the purchase history, in addition to the closing of the 2024 Quinoa Big Campaign, the purchase projection is lower than this last quarter of the year and the first quarter of 2025. This is the reason why in the Big Campaign the exporters buy and store big stocks in their warehouses to be able to fulfill their orders in the months of lower production.
2023 vs 2024 crop
- National production was 70,336 tons in 2023. This year it is projected to be closer to 110,000 tons.
- The 2023 crop was affected by a drought that hit the south of Peru, directly affecting the growing regions. The weather was much better in 2024, as volumes peaked in May.
- At the beginning of the 2024 campaign, the product was sprayed with pesticide
White Quinoa
The closing prices of the white quinoa were high in the 2024 Big Campaign, as there are months of lower supply of the product, the price trend is not projected to decrease, and like the previous periods, the trend is upward until the beginning of the next campaign in 2025. Conventional white quinoa is relatively in line with organic quinoa prices.
Red Quinoa
Coloured quinoa harvesting is projected to begin in October, with supplies lasting until January/February 2025. Prices at the beginning of the campaign are high, but prices tend to drop once we enter the new year.
