Pulses Harvest Report 11.06.24
Lentils, chickpeas, and beans are generally produced in Southeastern and Eastern Anatolia. These regions are suitable for pulse production with their soil structure and climate conditions. For example, more than 90% of lentils in Türkiye are produced in this area of the country. The hot and arid climate means that the low rainfall is sufficient for the drought-resistant crop.
Chickpeas
Cultivation areas in Türkiye show a 20% increase compared to the previous year. Considering the loss of yield last year, the good climate and yield will increase farmer yield by 30% in 2024. The productivity of crop produced is good in other countries too, but no matter how much yield there is, customs will determine the amount of chickpea exports this year. If there are no big issues, it's expected that the crop will be harvested in July. The estimated volume is around 150,000 tons.
Red Lentils
In Türkiye, 25% of the land dedicated to red lentils has been switched to wheat because the farmers have not been satisfied with lentil prices for the last 3 years. If there is no yield loss like last year and the weather is as expected, the estimates show that the volume will be as much as the previous season. Looking at areas allocated for lentil cultivation in other countries, it isn't thought that supply will be an issue and expected production is 250,000 tons.
Beans
It's thought that the same amount of space will be allocated for bean planting as has been in previous years. The demand for beans in the world markets is steadily increasing, and the average volume produced this year was 90-100,000 tons in Türkiye. Due to an export ban, domestic consumption has increased and prices have risen due to external factors such as the Russian-Ukraine war affecting world food prices.
